The Government has announced its plans to completely switch off analogue television transmission by 2012, by which time UK digital penetration will have risen to nearly 100%.   Digital channels (excluding music and shopping) broadcast a combined total of more than 58,000 hours of originated programming in 2003: more than half the UK’s total, and two and a half times as much as the network output of the five main channels combined.

Commercial digital channels provide a huge boost to the amount of public service broadcasting, providing over 14,000 hours in a typical month, with children's (6,500) and documentaries (9,500) making up the lion's share while BBC services combined broadcast only 3,120 hours.   Digital channels are particularly strong on factual PSB programming, with channels such as the History Channel and Discovery providing a range of quality documentary and other factual strands that account for an extra 1,600 hours a month.

Digital channels account for over 50% of viewing in multichannel homes and 76% of children's viewing.   The growth of multichannel TV in the UK is a major boost to the UK economy. Digital channel revenues rose from £1.9bn in 1998 to £4.6bn in 2003.
